Drum heads, which type?

Question: Evans EC2's or Evans Hydrolics? Any past experience with either of them would be helpful in choosing.

Answer: First you gotta know what type of sound you're going for. Like said previously, hydraulics heads hardly have any tone at all to them. Again, it also depends on the type of player you are. I'm a really hard hitting guy and I've found that the only way they can have some type of "tone" is by really bashing your way through the kit! If your a guy that plays with 5As, forget it, they'll sound dead. On the other hand of it's the type of sound you're looking for, go for it. My personnal advise would be to go with EC2s if you want more control but don't want to sacrifice the tone. Now, as far as tone (and overall quality) goes, I prefer Remo to Evans. They tune more easily, stay in tune longer, and have a longer life span. Another alternative to Hydraulics and EC2, would be Remo's Ebony Pinstripe. They have have a thicker top ply and thinner inner ply, resulting in more bottom, less sustain than regular EC2s or pinstripe, but not as control as the Hydraulics. My best advice would be to experiment with the different heads available. Say you decide to go for the EC2s, next you change your heads, go for Hydraulics or Pinstripe, that way you'll get a taste of every options available and will be able to make a choice of your own as to what suits your musical tastes and the musical set-up you're playing in the bests. PS: If you wanna try something cool, try putting an hydraulic head on a snare drum and tune it really low. You'll get lots of attack, lots of bottom, very warm, lots of presence......perfect for that typical "ballade" snare sounds.....straight out of the 80's!
